It's almost the outdoors time of year. Actually, we've only had a few nice days with plenty of freezy days in between. But a few nice days was all the motivation we needed to start planning the gardens. Tony already started a bunch of seedlings for a vegetable garden. Weeee! And we began construction -- who? us? -- on our first project of the season.
Here is Tony working on the first of three raised veggie beds. Each one will be 3 foot by 12 foot by 20 inches. Three feet will separate each bed.
And here is the first finished bed.
We're going to line them then fill them with a "garden mix" from a local dirt seller and our own compost fresh from the bin we build last year.
We're planting: tomatoes (duh), corn, okra, lots of carrots, radishes, cucumbers, spinach, lettuce, herbs herbs herbs, peppers, eggplant, shallots, and I'm sure there are others. Obviously we are not planting more than one or two plants of each -- except the carrots.
There are also plans for a Canna bed and we are starting a Japanese Garden by the bamboo.
In other news: Tony started a new job this week. He's still nursing-home nursing, but in a much nicer facility and with a substantial raise. YAY!
Knitting is coming along . . . slowly :( I'm sure that will turn around soon enough.
Later,
Eric

eeeeek Bamboo!
It will take over everything and then eat you!
I live in terror of bamboo and kudzu.
It looks great! I envy you, we still have 2 more months with winter and snow to look forward to. The spring will not appear before April...

I hope you'll plant some heirloom tomatoes for me - there's nothing better than heirloom tomato salad... YUM! :) will you do anything to the wood that makes the raised bed to keep it from touching the soil and rotting from the water? you're working hard and it's going to pay off to a beautiful and bountiful yard this summer!
